THE DOUGLAS SEABROOK
SINGLE VINEYARD TROPHY
The Douglas Seabrook Single Vineyard Trophy is awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in classes 1 to 5.
All entries must be from an individually named vineyard, the name of which appears on the commercial label of the wine. The wine must be made from at
least 95% of grapes grown on the
named vineyard.
The Seabrook Family have been part of the Australian wine business
since 1878, starting one of the country’s most respected wine companies
W.J Seabrook & Son.
WJ Seabrook started a wine brokers business in Melbourne back in 1878
assessing wine from many regions of Australia. W.J. Seabrook, one of
Australia’s earliest wine merchants, he was a judge at the inaugural Royal
Melbourne Wine Show in 1888. His son, T.C. followed his father as an
acclaimed judge for 35 years and began working at the family wine
business from the age of 12 and began to operate the business at age of 27.
As a broker, TC assessed fortified and table wines and relied on his extensive contacts with vignerons, hoteliers and restaurateurs. Typically, the trade was in hogsheads, wicker-covered, ceramic demijohns and special bottles of wine were sold direct to the public.
After 1940 W. J. Seabrook & Son evolved. The firm imported and exported wines, and began to produce it’s own blends under the Seabrook label. TC Seabrook was meticulous about wine and rarely drank a glass without appraising it. He became one of an influential group of connoisseurs
who helped to keep the trade alive when it was threatened by temperance restrictions, failing vineyards and a beer-drinking society's lack of understanding.
He was honorary secretary (1910-35) and president (1964-67) of the Viticultural Society of Victoria and in 1963 he was appointed O.B.E. Like his father before him and his son Douglas after him, he was chairman of wine judges at the Victorian Royal Agricultural Show.
T.C, surprisingly once a stern teetotaller to the age of 32, was renowned for his excellent
palate and acerbic wit and was often referred to as the man with the uncanny palate. In his
time he was probably Australias most knowledgeable expert in wine and judge.

Here what the best wine judges have to say !
Vineyards
Barossa Valley Vineyards:
Vine Vale, Barossa Valley, South Australia Shiraz Grapes
Our own Vine Vale vineyard lies at the base of popular Menglers
Hill and is well known for its structural savory concentrated fruit.
Krondorf, Barossa Valley, South Australia Shiraz Grapes
Clancys Krondorf vineyard in the Barossa Valley lies adjacent to the
famous Jacob's Creek. The red schist soils produce ultra premium fruit
which has a distinctively perfumed, rich, textural, yet elegant profile.
The Barossa Valley is Australias most famous wine region and is well known to produce highly concentrated, lush, complex, rich, intense, and full-bodied wines and these two vineyards make no exception. Summer days are hot and generally dry. Grapes ripen fast with high sugar levels and packed with flavor, producing intense wines with dark berries, plums, pepper, spice and liqorice characters. It is no surprise that Barossa Shiraz is renowned throughout the world as one of the best.
Glenkara Vineyard, Landsborough, Pyrenees, Victoria Shiraz Grapes
The Chairman Shiraz is sourced from the single vineyard Glenkara in the premium Pyrenees region of Victoria. The Pyrenees is located around the eponymous mountain range in Western Victoria and is well known for the minimal rainfall, long sunlight hours, and varied aspects which provide a multitude of micro climates, ideal for producing wines of great austerity and restraint. The climate and soils have proved to be very suitable for the production of high quality red wines and hence there is a predominance of shiraz as the variety of choice. This region is predominately to the north of Great Dividing Range. Dry autumns with cool nights make for ideal ripening conditions.
Angaston, Eden Valley Riesling grapes
The vineyard is cool with medium rainfall and warm to hot summers, however it lies in a sheltered and secluded valley that consequently ripens much later than other areas surrounding. The Eden Valley is a cool climate region nestled between 400 and 600 metres in the Barossa Range, part of the Mount Lofty Range. This vineyard produces Rieslings with pristine quality reflected in their minerality, citrus fruit and spiceness, holding great finesse particularly as they age.
Mintaro, Clare Valley Riesling Grapes
This family owned hand selected vineyard lies on the cool climate higher peaks of the Clare Valley and experiences cold winters. However, long hot days during the ripening period ensures the resultant wines are rich, delicate and austere. Long hot days and cool nights in summer contribute to crisp
acidity that balances well with these delicate perfumed wines.
